Ever wondered what the sharing patterns of a viral online image look like? Well, you’re about to find out. Award-winning data-visualisation specialists Stamen Design have used Facebook data to illustrate the explosive power of sharing on social media. Taking three images posted to the social networking site by George Takei, they have produced animations where every time the image is ‘shared’ by another Facebook user, a new branch appears. The video below shows sharing patterns for ‘Marvin the Martian’, while a second and third show patterns for other images shared by Takei. Data was collected between July and September, and covers instances where an image was shared directly from a Facebook user’s news feed.
